Story: Vijay (Sharman Joshi) and Yakub (Faruk Kabir) struggle to survive in the slums of Mumbai where ethics is last on the list of priorities. Peddling drugs and other contraband stuff for the local mafia, they end up in the juvenile home which turns out to be a bigger hell than the grimy wasteland they inhabited outside. Eleven years later, they emerge as thoroughbred gangsters themselves, aspiring to rule over the slum which taught them their first lessons in crime and life. They build a private army of slum kids and look forward to an undeterred reign. But with crime comes punishment, and sometimes repentance. Movie Review: The Oscar winning Brazilian film, City of God has been inspiration for many Indian film makers who have chosen to interpret the life of the children who fight their way through the ill-famed favelas through the experiences of Dharavi's kids. Faruk Kabir too may have been inspired by the landmark classic but his idiom and his interpretation of child exploitation is completely his own.

The film is a hard-hitting, gritty account of growing up in a dangerous place where all talk of ideals and values seems irrelevant. Vijay and Yakub would like to lead the good life too, but does life give them a chance to choose their ethics?

The duo are almost involuntarily sucked into the matrix of crime and violence, which leads them from the dark slums to the darker reform home where the Fagin-like warden (Naseeruddin Shah) and his minions transform them into complete crooks. And once they are out, they play out their gangster games in their favourite playground: the crummy by-lanes and crooked alleys of the slum where they grew up.

Allah Ke Bandey isn't meant to entertain you. It is a film that makes you sit up and send out a silent lament for the loss of innocence. The high point of the film are its strong performances and its authentic backdrop. Shot in actual location, the film crackles with a visual energy as the misdirected kids revel in gore amidst the slushy underworld. Both Sharman Joshi and Faruk Kabir play out the lead roles with fire and verve, but the scene-stealer is a cameo by Naseeruddin Shah. Watch him sip tea in a street cafe and shuffle for coins to pay up and you may get your money's worth.

Also, watch out for Faruk Kabir. He holds promise, both as an actor and a director.
