I'm always surprised at how little people actually do this. Most people just buy a TV, get it home from the store, and never really change anything. I've tinkered with the settings from time to time, but I finally downloaded the AVS HD 709 calibration screens and took the time to calibrate my TV. And holy bajeezus, what a change. It's not difficult, not by any stretch of the word, it just takes some time. There are a lot of settings after all. You have contrast, brightness, color, hue, TV mode (dynamic, normal, cinema, etc.), color mode (cool, normal, warm, etc.), and then you have the advanced settings like the White Balance, which involves RGB-gain and RGB-bias. At each of the numbers is a blinking white segment rectangle. All you have to do is change the brightness until a certain number of those blocks blinks. I believe they want all blocks after 17 blinking if I remember correctly. The other 16 shouldn't be visible. The 'contrast' screen is exactly the opposite, with black blinking blocks on a white background, etc., etc.
