A traditional symbol of authority, the University Mace was created for the inauguration of Samuel H. Smith as the eighth president of WSU in 1986. The mace is traditionally carried by the chair of the Faculty Senate during the procession of faculty members and graduating students at commencement and during the faculty and staff procession at convocation.
